Trucker is crushed to death

A 65-YEAR-OLD driver was killed yesterday after he was accidentally crushed by a lorry on an industrial estate.

The man, who has still to be named, died at the premises of Nortruck Services on the outskirts of Aberdeen.

Emergency services were called to Altens industrial estate shortly before 8am, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

He is understood to have become trapped between a lorry and a fence at the premises.

Nortruck supplies parts for commercial vehicles and has been in the haulage business for the past 20 years.

A spokesman for Grampian Police said: "We can confirm that a 65-year-old male was fatally injured in an industrial accident in Altens, Aberdeen, shortly before 8am.

"The Health and Safety Executive have also been informed. Although the investigation is in the early stages, it is not believed there are any suspicious circumstances at this stage."

He added: "As is normal in such circumstances, a post mortem will be carried out and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal."

Speaking at the scene of the tragedy, Sergeant Tom Lessells, of Grampian Police, said the driver, who also worked as a mechanic for the company, had been the only person involved.

He said: "An employee of Nortruck sustained a fatal injury while operating his vehicle on the premises. Several colleagues who came across the incident shortly after it happened are very distressed and upset."

One eyewitness, John Stevenson, said: "They were trying to get the man separated from the fence. They were removing parts of the fence but they couldn't get him out of there."
