Aberdeen worker badly hurt

A MAN was in hospital today with serious injuries after a building collapsed on him in Aberdeen.

The 56-year-old suffered serious head, neck and shoulder injuries after he was hit by falling debris.

He was working at a demolition site at Aberdeen’s Albert Quay when the roof of the building fell in.

The building, which is surrounded by rubble, was previously used by Craig Group Limited and Lawrie Demolition Ltd is currently working on it.

The firm could not be contacted for comment.

There were several diggers at the premises and the building was being torn apart when the accident happened.

Grampian Police and Scottish Ambulance Service workers attended.

A police spokesman said: “The incident happened at a building in the city's Albert Quay around 3.45pm.

“The site was evacuated after the accident. The circumstances surrounding the incident will be investigated by the Health & Safety Executive and Grampian Police.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the man was taken to hospital in Aberdeen.

She said: “We received the call at 3.39pm. A rapid response unit and an ambulance attended the scene.

“A man was taken to ARI where he was suffering from serious head, neck and back injuries.”

This was the second serious industrial accident in Aberdeen in the last two months.

Alfie Langmead, 65, was killed after he became trapped between a van and a fence at Nortruck Services Ltd’s premises in Altens in June. Mr Langmead, of Inverbervie, had worked as a van driver and labourer at the firm for around 15 years.
